Game Idea Research

Last week for game ideas I realised some of the brainstorm ideas were a little harder than what i'm equipped for yet. Such as :

-Building houses like in the Sim's(personally one fo my favourite parts)

-Puzzle Games

-An interactive game where you kill germs

After doing more research into these areas I found some really good and easy to understand tutorials on youtube for puzzle game development on unity. Using photos and splitting them in order to rearrange them the correct way. I was hoping to find something along these lines as I feel puzzle games are really therapeutic.

When considering ideas for this game I looked up youtube videos on similar tutorials done in this certain area. Although some photos used were more for children I feel this is still a game that can be used for all ages as it uses is for more a therapeutic and a use of distracting during the times we are in now. When considering the movement for the game I want to keep it simple but not too simple that you wont still enjoy it. When considering what way to do the puzzle I thought of it starting out simple with easy puzzles and let there be 5 levels. Once you complete them correctly you'll progress to the next level with a slightly harder puzzle. I considered a point system or you get coins as considering what we've been learning already but I want this to be enjoyable without the pressure of needing to get coins or that.

There were many Youtube Unity tutorials I found to be really useful and informative. While typing this I realise it might not sound like much but I wanted to keep my concept simple yet enjoyable in a non- competitive way. The photo below is where I got some inspiration from for this idea.

Im excited to get started on this and hope I can learn the appropriate skills needed to execute this idea. This is going to be a challenge for me as I've stated in pervious post's I game but feel this is just a different level completely.

Thanks for Reading!

  1. Hey Mel! I just read your game idea research and think it could turn out really well. I watched the YouTube tutorial that you posted and think it's cool that you will be able to decide what image will be in the puzzle, maybe there will be a few different ones that players can choose from? You didn't go into much detail about what image/images you were interested in specifically and just wondered if you knew yourself yet? I also wondered if there was going to be any conflict in the game to make it more challenging for the player? What if there was a timer that gave you a specific amount of time to complete the game and not doing it in time meant game over? I think this could be a good addition to the game! I also think it's great that it's age friendly - looks like something even younger people robbing their parents phones/tablets could play! I hope it works out well for you and feel free to give me any suggestions too!

  2. Hey, I agree with your opinion about puzzle games being therapeutic. They are good for our brain and let us to improve our focus. Your idea for a game seems to be good for everyone at any age which is a very good thing as this means that more people will be able to play it. I think it could be a very nice game to play , especially in these times. I watched the YouTube video tutorial and it looks promising. You have mentioned that you don’t want the game to be stressing in any way, which is good as it allows the player to just enjoy the game without any pressure. But I wonder if you could add in an optional timer so that players who like some boost could challenge their family and friends to see who solves the puzzle faster. This would be optional for the player to decide in the menu but I think this would add some more excitement to the game. I look forward to your game, goodluck.

  3. Hi Melissa, It's Aoibhe here. just had a read through your game idea research blog post there. Well done it seems like you put a lot of research into this blog post and have thought a lot about your game idea. I agree that puzzle games can be very relaxing. I wonder would you consider the point system again? I see you have spoken about it and said you wanted to make it enjoyable. I know for myself that I would still find your game very enjoyable if I were getting a point/coin for each square of the puzzle that i moved into the right space. It just might be nice to give the player a reward and make them want to keep going with the puzzle. I wonder would this work? Also what if for the more difficult puzzles there were hints for the player if they can't get it. I'm not sure about the mechanics behind this one but maybe the finished puzzle could pop up on the screen for 1 second when you press the hint button and it is up for the player to remember where the pieces go. Well Done, I cant wait to play your game- Aoibhe

  4. Hi Melissa, I really enjoyed reading your blog I think your game concept is very interesting and I like how it is not limited to anyone demographic. The research you have done is very well put together, and the unity tutorial videos look very interesting. I also like how you are making the game to be more therapeutic as I think there are many games out there that don’t do a good job of this. I was wondering will you be using color theory when designing your user interface. This would be an interesting idea to consider and even make the users feel even more relaxed when playing your game. I do feel you should consider adding a leaderboard system to the game, as I believe this will make the game more replayable.

  5. Hey Melissa,
I have just finished looking over your game idea research here and I think this is a really cool idea you have here. I love your idea of using photos and not simple photos putting it in more of a therapeutic style for all ages and splitting them in order to rearrange them. Would you suggest making different stages like choosing to start the game with Easy, Medium or Hard?, and with that the time setting would be different depending on the level or the stage chosen. I am also wondering what kind or type of images would you be using, where would you be getting these from?.
I really hope you succeed with making this game of yours, Keep it up!

  6. Hi Melissa! I have just finished reading your blog post there and I have to say your game idea concept is quite unique and interesting, I haven't seen another 'Creative Digital Media' student think of this idea yet so yours will definitely stand out! I was wondering have you thought of adding a time limit to make the game more fast paced video game. I think your idea of using this game to be therapeutic is great especially with how much we all need it right now during this crazy time. Would you ever think of adding some peaceful music to give the therapeutic effect to your game?
Your game idea is great and keep up the good work I am looking forward to seeing it in action!
Best of luck this semester and feel free to view my blog and give me any suggestions you may think I need.

  7. Hey Melissa! Just read your blog post about your game idea and I really enjoyed hearing about your game idea. Personally I do find puzzle games relaxing, one of my favourites is called '10/10' and i could play it for hours on end you should definitely check it out for inspiration! I love the way your game concept is not limited to people of certain ages as this can lessen your audience. Just wondering how the game will work overall, what will the player be solving exactly? Will there be different levels e.g 1,2,3 or easy, medium, hard? It would also be great to see some sample layouts you were thinking of, or even pictures of games you have taken inspiration from.
Your idea is fantastic and I am really excited to see the outcome of your game. Best of luck with it and feel free to leave me some feedback on my blog to!

  8. Hi Melissa. I think your game idea is incredibly unique since a lot of people are doing 3D platforms including me. I find puzzles like that addicting especially when I have nothing else to do. I wonder how the rewards system will work, will the player have to solve the puzzle quickly in order to unlock the next one? I feel like that would be a good add-on if you were to implement it. One suggestion would be to include a timer, I feel a game sometimes needs a challenge and maybe the player can choose the option? The timer is so the player needs to figure out the puzzle before the timer runs out. I feel like that would be great! - Anna Zurawska

  10. Hi Melissa, your game idea is really good. I like how you're not going to create a competitive game like most people with the goal of doing better. Having a game like this would be very relaxing. I never played a puzzle game on a pc, phone or console. Hopefully this will be the first one I get to play on an electronic device, Denis.
